How to read a betting app's rating without being misled
A store rating belongs to one country and one platform. Almost every figure circulating about these apps has lost one of the two.
App ratings look like the most solid numbers available about a bookmaker. They come from a platform nobody in the industry controls, they aggregate thousands of people, and they are trivially easy to check. They are also the figures most consistently wrong in this market, for reasons that have nothing to do with anybody lying.
Ratings are country-scoped
The same application shows a different average in different storefronts, because the reviews shown are the ones from that country. One app on this register reads four point zero on the Ghana storefront, four point five in a neighbouring market and higher again elsewhere. A figure fetched without a country set is not this country's figure, and that is the commonest error here by a wide margin.
Ratings and counts come from different places
A rating from one platform welded to a review count from the other produces a figure that looks precise and describes nothing. So does a global review total pinned to a country-scoped average. Both appear in circulation about apps on this register, and both are on the log.
Download size is not one number
The size of an iOS build and the size of an Android build for the same product routinely differ by a factor of several. Printing the one that was easiest to find beside a rating from the other platform is the same category error, and it is why most records on this site carry no size at all rather than the available one.
What a rating is actually good for
Recurring themes in recent reviews, read on the storefront for your own country. Complaints about verification friction, withdrawal status confusion or an update that broke the app are useful and specific. The average is the least informative number on the page.
Questions this raises
- Why do some of these books have no store listing at all?
- Real-money gambling applications are barred from the main Android store in this market, so a direct download from the operator's own site is the normal route rather than a warning sign in itself. It does mean the store's own checks are not between you and the file.
- Is a name-alike listing dangerous?
- It is at minimum useless. One brand on this register has several plausible-looking listings published by companies with no connection to it, and the record names them so that a reader downloading an app can check the publisher rather than the icon.
